Wedding at Thirty Two at the Mansion, Penang

In a Nutshell
Heritage, romantic, by the beach. A perfect venue to hire for a private party.

I had rather high expectations when I went to consider 32 Mansion, Penang as a wedding venue. Photos of this restaurant / lounge which I’d seen online made me excited – sunlight pouring through large glass windows and long tables covered with elegant white linens. I arrived there to be greeted with probably the only downside to having a wedding at 32 Mansion, Penang – the lack of parking spaces for your guests in the circular-shaped car park. Then again, I am told that the lack of parking is quite common in Penang.

32 Mansion was built by Leong Yin Kean, the son of tin-magnate Leong Fee in 1926. It was modelled after villas in the Italian seaside and those in London’s Regent’s Park. Restored in the year 2000, it includes a stable and courtyard, both of which have been creatively transformed and utilised as part of this up-market restaurant.

I noticed at once what an amazing venue 32 Mansion would be if you hired the entire place for a wedding. It had all the elements that attracted me – it was an exclusive standalone building with historical value, it had greenery throughout and a very own beach-side lounge for the after-party.

The first thing that greets me after walking through the doors is this Colonial-Renaissance lobby decor (which reminds me of the table setting at the lobby at the E&O Hotel; read more about this at: Wedding at E&O hotel). A painting of the Girl with the Pearl Earring would have complemented the round table, candle chandelier and other portraits of a bygone era.

Beyond the lobby and through velvet curtains lay a cosy lounge where I imagine patrons having endless conversations into the night while smoking cigars or pipes from their low chairs.

I walked further into the mansion to discover that I am now standing at what used to be the wooden stables, now turned into the cocktail reception area with a bar. Then behold, the magnificent courtyard area brightly lit with sunlight pouring in from the large windows, long tables, wooden chairs, and a romantic white draping canopy.

The unfortunate thing about this beautiful display is that the court yard is actually quite hot in the afternoon, making it unsuitable for functions being held at that time. As the canopy is “open air”, I am informed that even mobile air-conditioning and fans may not be enough to relieve your guests from Malaysia’s hot and humid weather. The temperature however, will cool down in the evening and you can happily book the courtyard for a sunset reception-then dinner event. If it should rain, I am promised that the canopy is large enough to ensure water does not seep through.

Those preferring a lunch reception at the venue can use this indoor dining area at the back of the Mansion which can seat up to 50 people.

After touring the courtyard in awe, I walk out of the side door to what I think is one of the unique selling points of having a wedding at 32 Mansion – its seaside lounge Babylon. The breezy environment and relaxing, woody decor presents a perfect place for human beings to chill out during in the evening. For a minimum spend of around RM18,000 you can also book the entire mansion and the seaside lounge for your wedding guests to rock on and party into the night after the dinner banquet. I can’t imagine a better idea than having a disco with friends and family on the wooden floors of the lounge with the sea breeze in your face and hair.

In conclusion, 32 Mansion is an awesome wedding venue for those who like nature, period buildings, the sea and want a private and relaxed wedding.
